Precision Agriculture

Overview

The Precision Agriculture Pillar focuses on developing and promoting innovative strategies to support crop production while reducing both economic costs and environmental impact. Within the Samothrace project, advanced sensing systems and smart materials have been designed to optimize field operations and resource use. Thanks to these tools, it becomes possible to act precisely where, when, and how each crop requires, ensuring more efficient and sustainable agricultural practices.

A distinctive strength of this pillar has been the constant and productive exchange of data, ideas, and results among all partners involved. This continuous interaction has accelerated experimental progress and strengthened the technological foundations of each research activity. Throughout the project, several flagship initiatives have been identified for their capacity to generate prototypes already validated in relevant environments, with a clear and feasible path toward technological transfer and practical application in the agricultural sector.

These flagship activities are organized around three major thematic areas.

  • Plant health monitoring, which focuses on early detection of stress conditions, pathogens, and environmental threats through innovative sensing technologies.
  • Sustainable management of natural water resources, aiming to optimize water use in agriculture while safeguarding both soil and ecosystem health.
  • Smart sensing of irrigation water, dedicated to real‑time evaluation of chemical and biological parameters essential for guaranteeing safe and efficient irrigation practices.

Together, these activities constitute a coherent framework that empowers a new generation of farmers with advanced tools for precision and sustainability.
