From 20 to 23 September 2025, Giardini Naxos in Sicily hosted AISS 2025 – Sensors in Focus: From Fundamentals to Applications. This initiative was organized jointly by the AISEM, the University of Messina, and the Samothrace Foundation.

During the event, 35 students and researchers from various backgrounds engaged with national and international experts. The program blended theoretical lessons with practical activities, demonstrations, and active scientific discussions to fully explore the capabilities and limitations of individual technologies.

Topics ranged from the fundamentals of optical, electrochemical, and resonant sensors to advanced materials and microfabrication technologies. Participants also explored data acquisition, the application of Artificial Intelligence in the sensor field, and real-world uses spanning clinical diagnostics, environmental control, industry automation, and the agri-food sector.

The programme additionally featured flash oral presentations and hands-on demos to directly evaluate the pros and cons of various sensing methods.

It proved to be a unique opportunity to enhance knowledge in the rapidly evolving field of sensors, foster collaboration among experts, and understand how to design devices that are small, simple, cheap, and time-saving
